How to Choose the Best Domain Name for your idea, is something that I’m sure every person wonders at some point in their life, at the latest when actually thinking about setting up a website 🙂
How to Choose the Best Domain Name
Your Domain Name will be visible to anyone visiting your website. It will be on all Social Media Channels you choose to use, on all print materials referencing your business or non-profit.
It’s your home address on the internet, so it should be something that you like and that makes sense.
One of the first things to choose is your domain name extension. Most people use .com, though depending on your location an extension referencing you specific location might make sense. That could be .ca for Canada, .de for Germany or .fr for France. .org is usually used for organizations, .net for networks. There are more and more business specific extensions too, such as .design or .biz.
If you’d like to have a web presence that has different websites in different regions, it might make sense to check if all those extensions are available for the domain name you choose.
Once you’ve determined which extension might be the best for you, we can move to the domain name.
There are a couple of easy considerations e.g. to keep the domain name short or to make it something memorable. Choose a domain name that is easy to understand and easy to read.
These make sense, no matter what you are planning on doing, but there are a couple of considerations which depend on what you are actually planning on doing with the website you need your domain name for.
I have two insider tips for you.
Insider Tip 1
yourname.com or yourbusiness.com? is your website going to be for a specific service or product or is it going to be a place for different fields of interest that you have, which will all be represented on your website? Will people be looking for you or your business? Your best domain name depends on that.
Your url can also have an effect on your search results, so it makes sence to choose something that people will actually be looking for.
Participants of the Web Design For Change Course will be answering these questions in the first week, when we define our brands, but this is something to consider for everyone.
It is also important to look if there is already somebody else who uses a similar name and offers a similar service. If you are flowershopberlin.com and there is a berlinflowershop.com which offers the same things that you want to offer, then it might make more sense to choose lisasflowers.com so that people looking for you know immediately that they are in the right place.
Insider Tip 2
If you want to make it easy on yourself and everyone else – after you’ve considered the above – check if your preferred domain name is also available on social media.
That way you can have lisasflowers.com and @lisasflowers on the social media channels that you want to use.
And that’s it. 🙂
